Interferon-γ- należy do klasy II interferonów, jest produkowany głównie przez aktywowane limfocyty i komórki NK. Jest to prozapalna cytokina, która indukuje makrofagi i komórki endotelium, ale stymuluje także odpowiedź immunologiczną przez aktywację komórek prezentujących antygen oraz limfocytów T i B. IFN-γ jest również produkowany przez limfocyty T pomocnicze i limfocyty T cytotoksyczne w odpowiedzi na patogeny wewnątrzkomórkowe. IFN-γ wzmaga ekspresję cząsteczek MHC klasy I i II, zwiększa cytotoksyczność limfocytów T cytotoksycznych, komórek NK, aktywuje makrofagi, wzmaga fagocytozę, stymuluje wydzielanie innych cytokin, np. IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α. IFN-γ we współpracy z innymi cytokinami pobudza limfocyty B do produkcji przeciwciał. IFN-γ wykazuje silne działanie antyproliferacyjne, dlatego może być inhibitorem krwiotworzenia.
